Aim of the course
In this six week long course we will refresh the mathematical knowledge needed to pass the entrance teston 11 July 2016 for studies within the program Studies for refugees and people entitled to political asylum.
See also here.
We will put a strong focus on techniques for solving the exercises of the entrance test and we will practise
for the test. The course is held in German, with elements of English and Arabic. You do not need to register
for this course (but for the entrance test, of course). However, for insurance reasons, you are asked to
inscribe as a guest student. For doing so, go to the Welcome Center (building A4 4) and bring your passport
and 1,30 Euro.
How international students can access studying at Saarland University
(a) If you are a recognized refugee and if you have no certificates from your high school or former university:- Pass the entrance test on 11 July 2016.
- Be under the best students in the ranking and obtain a place in the DSH or FSP program.
- Learn German and basic topics from a German high school in the DSH or FSP program for 2-3 terms.
- Study one of the possible MINT courses of study.
- Apply to uni-assist.
- Pass a German test on the level DSH 2.
- (If you did not pass: Learn German and basic topics from a German high school in the DSH or FSP program for 2-3 terms.)
- Study any of the courses at Saarland University.
Topics of the course and the entrance test
The topics covered in this course are those necessary for the test:- functions and their graphs
(identifying and sketching the graphs of polynomials, rational functions, trigonometric functions,
exponential function and logarithm, square root) - Logarithm and exponential function
(identifying and sketching their graphs; knowing their rules; simplifying terms) - factorization of polynomials
(factorization into linear terms; finding the zeros/roots; solving polynomial equations) - Solving systems of linear equations
- Asymptotics of functions
(limits of functions and asymptotic behaviour) - Derivation and integration
(derivation and integration of functions as in functions and their graphs; product/quotient/chain rule;
tangents of functions; extremal values/minimum/maximum and zeros/roots of a function; primitives;
integration by parts, integration by substitution; area under a graph of a function/between two functions) - elementary geometry
(areas and volumes of elementary objects like cubes, balls, circles, pyramides etc) - basic vector calculus
(addition and subtraction of vectors in three dimensions; scalar multiplication; cross product; orthogonality)
