Vorlesung
Mo und Do, 12 - 14, im SR 10, Geb. E2 4with the language of noncommutative rings and algebras, and bimodules over these. We
will dip into category theory to discuss the "hom-tensor adjunction". Then we will narrow
our discussion to the concept of finite-dimensional semi-simple algebras over a field. The
highlight will be Wedderburn's Theorem, which says that each such algebra $A$ is isomorphic
to a direct sum of matrix algebras over division rings. Finally, we will discuss two applications:
- If $G$ is a finite group then Wedderburn's Theorem applied to the complex group algebra
$A=\mathbb{C}[G]$ gives us all of the basic facts about the representation theory of $G$.
- If $G$ is a finite group of automorphisms of a field $L$, then Wedderburn's Theorem
applied to a certain algebra $L \sharp G$ allows us to recover the fundamental theorem of
Galois Theory without mentioning "separable" or "normal" field extensions.
