"Mathematical Introduction to Modern Physics”. - The lecture will be followed next term by the lecture Operator algebras (Functional analysis II).
Vorlesung/ Lecture
Di und Do 14-16, im HS IV/ Tue and Thu 14-16, lecture hall IV, E2 4The lectures start at 14:00 sharp (14:00 st). The language of the course is English.
Inhalt
(See here for the English announcement)In vielen Bereichen der Mathematik verhalten sich Vorgänge in etwa wie Funktionen,

English announcement
In mathematics, we often encounter structures which behave like functions, known fromReal Analysis courses. In the lecture Functional Analysis we will extend our understanding
to infinite dimensional spaces. We focus on linear maps between these spaces, their (generalized)
eigenvalues and their diagonalization. Thus, in Functional Analysis, we combine methods from
Linear Algebra and Analysis as well as from Topology and Algebra. Moreover, we will investigate
noncommutative functions, i.e. functions f and g nto satisfying fg=gf. This yields a kind of
noncommutative topology or noncommutative measure theory providing tools needed in quantum
mechanics and others.
In this lecture, we will deal with topologies on infinite dimensional vector spaces, prove the
theorems by Hahn-Banach and Baire, introduce Banach spaces, Hilbert spaces, linear operators
on them and study their spectral theory, and we will treat operator algebras such as Banach
algebras and C*-algebras. The lecture builds on basic knowledge in Analysis and Linear
Algebra. The lecture is 4 hours per week plus exercise sessions. In total, there are 9 credit
points for this lecture.
The language of the course is English by default, unless all participants do speak German.
